Stopping drinking is a time of reflection

reflectionA strange thing happens when we stop drinking. When the beer goggles are removed it’s often a time of reflection and the chance to weigh up one’s life. This can often lead us to compare our lives to those around us.

In truth this social comparison is happening all the time. From an evolutionary standpoint our social status matters, so we look at our social ladder and wish we were higher up. This is very natural but can also have a negative impact on our well-being.

Too often we compare and assume. We look at the guy in the bar drinking the nice wine – who is smiling, has nice clothes, a nice car and assume – he must be so happy.

You might find yourself saying ‘If only I had the nice clothes , the car, and the money I would be happy…’ But consider this scenario – The guy at the bar with the nice smile is secretly comparing himself to the barman who doesn’t appear have a care in the world. He is assuming that this guy is so lucky, because he knows nothing of pressure. Real pressure that comes from running a business, keeping the kids at private school, keeping up with the Joneses, staying afloat…He is thinking – if  I didn’t have a care in the world, I’d be happy too.

STOP this merry-go-round of assumption and comparison.

We have no idea and neither does anyone else for that matter. We don’t know what goes on in other people’s lives. We don’t know if they are really happy.  So let’s stop assuming and start living our own life. This is all that matters. Not some perfect airbrushed world. Who cares if he has more money, better looks or a nicer car. Why should that influence our world?

Always remember the only thing we can truly control are our beliefs and emotions.

Consider how lucky you are in this moment

So take a minute to consider all those people less fortunate than you. All those those millions upon millions of people who would love to have what you have. Learn to appreciate how great your life is in this very moment and forget any pointless comparison. And remember your life is about to get a whole lot better. The vitality, energy, confidence, health, wealth and happiness you receive from going alcohol free will brighten your world forever.

Good luck on your adventures,

Andy Ramage
