‘Most men live lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them’ – Henry David Thoreau

I love this quote, it is a wonderful wake up call on numerous levels. I find it sad that so many people, for all the bravado, are leading lives of quiet unspoken desperation. Behind closed doors, when no one is around, they are genuinely sad and fearful of life. Ironically very often it’s the loudest that suffer in the silence the most.

Alcohol is the superficial paper that covers these cracks, while making them worse on the inside. The desperation comes from not having taken a chance on life. Of being too scared to act and feeling deep down that life has beaten them into submission. For all the noise and the chatter, they are too afraid to march to the beat of their own drum.

Hangovers and regret compound on this quiet desperation. While lethargy and anxiety can mute the most beautiful song.

At OneYearNoBeer we aim to show you that it is never too late to change everything and anything. We have seen it time and time again with our own eyes. Once the fog of booze is lifted something powerful happens. Suddenly you become aware of your inner and outer worlds. Those dreams that have been on hold for so long come back into play. This can produce deep meaning and purpose that will lead you on your life’s journey.

The desperation is replaced by self-esteem and a confidence that what you do makes a difference. You will be marching to the sound of your own drum.
