“I have loved the support I have received throughout this challenge and I do not think I would have made it this far if I hadn’t joined.”

I was a regular drinker, averaging about 20 units a week. I liked a gin and tonic while I was cooking and drinks with my friends at the weekend. My close friend died in August last year and I reacted by having a month-long bender. I realised that the alcohol wasn’t helping my grief or my relationship with my children. I often experienced the guilt you get with a hangover as well as reduced patience and tolerance for people.

Starting my OYNB challenge

Eleanor after her challengeI wasn’t sure how I would get on when I started out on my challenge. I used the Facebook group a lot, getting advice on how to help with the initial cravings. I listened to the recommended quit lit as well as drank AF drinks (I like the beer!). I had my 40th birthday party during my 90-days and I was so over excited and hyper that I didn’t need a drink. Then the next day I was up and ready to celebrate with my family.

The benefits I have experienced

I’ve loved the sleep! It’s amazing. To fall asleep naturally, sleep well and then wake up in the morning fresh faced and raring to go. I had my over 40 health check recently and because I don’t drink my risk of heart disease is <1!

I have loved the OYNB Challengers Facebook group, I didn’t necessarily ‘actively’ engage but I loved the support that other members gave each other. It helped to know I wasn’t on my own.

What's next?

I can now say that I don’t drink alcohol. What I’ve enjoyed the most is how much more engaged I am with life. I’m not waiting for 5pm so I can have a gin, there’s no ‘Mummy drinks wine’ culture in the house. I find I have more patience and a greater tolerance, not just with my family but in general. When I go out, I don’t need the drink to keep me going – I’m often the last one out at night but the first up in the morning. I actually enjoy nights out more now!

I have loved the support I have received throughout this challenge and I do not think I would have made it this far if I hadn’t joined. I’d recommend it to anyone.

Take the challenge
