lonelyWhen we were kids our interests may have been bike riding, playing Nintendo, and football, all day every day. As we aged things changed, some of us went from carefree high schoolers, to college students with a flare for pub crawls and beer pong. No matter where we began, the majority of us ended up in a career with a family and somehow along the way we transformed into a whole new being…an adult.

Slowly, but surely we realize that bars and drinking isn’t the number one thing on our mind anymore, quite frankly it’s kind of holding us back. Throughout our entire youth and adolescence we had a pose, a tribe, a community of like minded peers who we could lean on for advice and a good laugh. Sadly, as we transition through this new phase in our lives, as our focus sharpens, our community becomes smaller and smaller.

Whether it’s OYNB or another community you connect with, it’s proven that socializing as well as being part of a community is good for your health! You just have to pick what type of group you want to be a part of. Hopefully it’s something positive that connects with where you see yourself and who you strive to be.

Socialize for Your Healths Sake!

One of the best kept secrets to good health and a long life? Having a robust social network that includes relatives, friends, and other relationships. These are just a few of the reasons why you should prioritize your family and pals.

  • You’ll be less likely to get sick. In one well-known study, folks with more diverse social connections were less susceptible to colds than those who were socially isolated.
  • You may sleep better. Being lonely leads to restless sleep, a University of Chicago study suggests: The lonelier you are, the more you toss and turn.
  • You’ll stay sharper. Having strong social support may cut your risk of cognitive decline, according to several studies.
  • You could live longer. People with stronger social connections were 50% more likely to live longer than those with weaker connections, a 2010 analysis found. That makes the impact of friendlessness comparable to that of smoking.

So What do You Choose?

There’s tons of things you can get into, just find something that works for you. Literally step out of your comfort zone, do something you've never done before and be completely open minded about it as well as the people you meet! Don’t dwell on who you used to be, look for new and exciting challenges, if you’re a little scared you’re probably onto something!

Weekly Testimonial

It is early days, less than a fortnight, but this is the best thing that has happened to me for ages. I have tried to cut down and stop alcohol before, but here the difference is the knowledge that there are others all doing the same thing at the same time, and the daily email is perfectly timed for beer o’clock for added inspiration and thought. I am very confident that I am going to crack the 365 days, at the end of which I suspect it will become 365 years, so thank you very much. – Nick
