Be Proud of Yourself

Because Pressing Reset Takes Character, And Guts…

Now maybe you feel like you’ve made a mistake.

OK if you do, but that’s not how it is.

Yes, you did something that perhaps you weren’t happy about – but then you owned it.

You’re still here with us in OYNB – you didn’t hide or walk away.

Still committed to achieving a successful AF lifestyle.

And you know, without all the bad experiences I had caused by drinking over the years, the inspiration to go AF in the first place would probably never have come to me.

What you’ve done, is given yourself a clean slate to begin the AF Challenge once more.

Every new beginning is an opportunity for change and growth

So grab it.

And right now I’d like to tell you a story about OYNB (and Alcohol-Free Me) member Kate – even better, I’ll put it in her own words:

“I joined OYNB in March 2018 and signed up for the 90 day challenge, determined to change my relationship with alcohol. My consumption of Sauvignon Blanc had been gradually increasing and whilst Dry January made me feel better I never succeeded with a full month! I was drinking pretty much every evening. It was really starting to impact my health and my only stop button on a night out was falling asleep unconsciously!

Since I signed up, I have had more alcohol-free days than if I hadn’t, however I was becoming a serial day 1 resetter and not really personally connected to my challenge. I was also struggling to connect with the people whose challenge was taking them into double digit or triple digit victory…”

Kate did incredibly well from AFM and was brave enough to give us permission to publish a detailed testimonial of her highs AND lows using her real name…

More on that in a moment, but I’ll just take a moment to say we are seriously proud of her.

Similar sentiments were expressed by AFM member *Peter:

(*name changed for privacy)

“I was a little overwhelmed by the volume of members in the Challengers group and thought connecting to a smaller group would be helpful to me. I also wanted additional tools and education to be successful in my AF journey…”

And AFM member *Rachel had this to say:

(*name changed for privacy)

I had been a serial resetter and wanted a more immersive experience, and liked the idea of a smaller accountability group.”

Do You Feel Lost In The Crowd?

What we’ve found is – just like real life – when we’re online some of us prefer a small and intimate friend group, rather than a very big, busy social scene.

And some OYNB members find it a bit tougher to get involved with the big group experience and can start to feel a bit ‘lost in the crowd’.

Some want to be on the ‘inside track’ and get a bit more access to the coaching and mentorship from our founders and leadership team…

And some just want to make sure they ace their challenge with the least possible setbacks, and by any means necessary.

We’re all different and it really doesn’t matter how you get there. But you need to get there.

Finishing your Challenge with your goal achieved is pretty much the most important thing you can do right now

It may seem that other things – family, bills, health, work – are more pressing problems…

But actually, your ability to handle all of life’s challenges is being held back whenever you drink – so transforming your relationship with alcohol is going to unlock deeper strengths and abilities you probably don’t even know that you have yet.
And that’s why we’ve created our smaller group coaching course, Alcohol-Free Me – a smaller private group (we call it a Tribe) experience that offers a different level of support and accountability.

How it works is, we:

Get together online with you, the Tribe, the coaches and OYNB Co-founder Andy Ramage.

And we’re always teaching (and learning!) the best ways to create lasting behavioural change

No matter what, we show up every single day – holding you accountable to do the things and make the changes you need to achieve the goals you commit to…

You’ll get a relentless push to show up too, and keep the momentum going, no matter what slips, blips and stumbles you encounter along the way

10 times a week, we do a big live Zoom video conference – we call it a Huddle – where our coaches go through the week’s struggles and successes, breaks down the elements of each win, and coaches you through the problem areas.

And there’ll be regular visits from special guest coaches – writers, speakers and other leaders who got AF into their lives, and then used it to propel them onto new heights of personal and business success…

Why is Alcohol-Free Me a Tribe?

“A tribe is a group of people connected to one another, connected to a leader, and connected to an idea. For millions of years, human beings have been part of one tribe or another. A group needs only two things to be a tribe: a shared interest and a way to communicate.”

Seth Godin, ‘Tribes: We Need You to Lead Us’

The idea that certain online communities become modern Tribes comes from writer Seth Godin, who has some interesting ideas about what bonds a Tribe together.

He describes online Tribes as ‘built on faith’ – belief in an idea and in a community.

Tribes are initially fueled by dissatisfaction – a gap between what someone is experiencing, and what they want to experience instead.

The core of the Tribe is a shared dream, which Tribe members gather around like our ancestors gathered around a campfire – and this dream has three parts:

  • Desire to go from here to somewhere new
  • Belief that it can be accomplished
  • A path to get there
  • In this way, the Tribe tells a story about who we are now and the future we’re trying to build.

And that’s exactly what we’re doing inside AFM.

What’s more, OYNB’s positive psychology ‘Alcohol-Free’ approach to drinking has shared roots with longstanding cultural movements among American Indian tribes.

In a 2004 paper by scholar William White, he describes the record of how Western approaches to excessive drinking were preceded by:

“Native American ‘recovery circles’… the first recovery mutual aid societies – some 200 years before”

And White goes on to say:

“…that historical legacy continues today through the growing and increasingly vibrant Wellbriety movement”

Rather like what we’ve done with our ideas about the upgraded ‘AF Lifestyle’, Native American community groups were not satisfied with the dour and moralistic European concept of ‘sobriety’.

So they coined the phrase ‘Wellbriety’ instead, with added positive meanings of: “physical, emotional and spiritual health”. In the book Red Road to Wellbriety: they have the following affirmation:

“We will heal ourselves, we will heal our wounded relationships, we will heal our children, we will heal our nation. On this day, our future history begins.”

This is exactly in line with our ideas and makes it clear why the ideas of group-based accountability and mutual support are best understood as the work of a Tribe.

False Starts Lead To Inspiration

In the beginning, I reset so many times before I got AF right – it was way harder than I thought it would be.

In any case, I kept going.

I came to see the mistakes I made were part of the process, and the most important thing was to keep up the momentum (and now I teach others the same).

Get up, shake it off, wash my face and start again.

But every time I did something wrong, I thought about it, made a note of it, examined it and put in the effort to figure out a fix.

Then later on when Ruari and I made OYNB an official ‘thing’, all those little notes and experiences were a big part of our raw data when we created the Challenges, developed the coaching system, and sat down to write our book.

It’s a funny thing about life – without all my mistakes, slip-ups, low points, and what I once thought of as ‘my failures’…

I’d never have found the understanding or inspiration that lead to my proudest achievements

But looking back, I think I could have hit my goals way faster if I had a coaching team to lead me at that time…

AFM Member Testimonials

Something I almost forgot - here’s how Kate got on with the course:

“I feel much more confident within myself and the AFM Tribe helped me achieve that with their unwavering support.

I am now 57 days alcohol-free (never managed a 14 days streak before this). I have some new tools and coaching techniques and I am more connected to the reasons why I’m doing this. I am enjoying being me and actually loving myself again. It has been great to invest time in ME!

The things I am proud to have achieved so far:

  • I have lost a stone in weight just by stopping drinking
  • My blood pressure is completely normal without medication
  • I have no anxiety at all – none
  • I am exercising again & starting to eat healthily
  • I have signed up to the 365-Day Challenge and am proud of it
  • I have been to family events and work events and been happy alcohol-free
  • I invest time in me every day

I’ve ditched mindless candy crush for mindfulness, reading and podcasts”I am never saying never again but right here, right now, I can honestly say I’ve never felt better in my adult life and able to deal with whatever the world throws at me. Oh and I’ve made some friends along the way that will be my “accountability buddies” for a long time to come.”

And it's not just Kate who's had amazing results like this, and become an inspiration to those around her…

AFM member Claire was initially skeptical, but gave AFM a chance – and was glad she did:

“AFM August was coming up but I really didn’t think it would be for me. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from it, and if I’m being really honest I just didn’t think it would give me what I needed to continue going forward with my journey. But I signed up anyway.

How wrong could I have been! AFM has been awesome! Andy’s advice in the initial Zoom call of, if you throw yourself in, get out of your comfort zone and participate you will reap the benefits. I thought why not, I’m here, give it a go, so I did.

The smaller group format helped with being able to share and listen to others. The Tribe are so encouraging, positive and supportive, when you need help its there.

Personally the journalling has been a ‘game changer’ it has helped focus where I want to go and what I want to get out of this journey. I’ve benefited so much I have continued into the September AFM and intend to carry on with the Mastermind course in October.

Initially the alcohol-free journey is tough going, you have to put in the hard work, but the rewards are just amazing.  Life is simpler, calmer, there is clarity about who I am as a person and life is more exciting than it’s ever been.”

Plus we’ve collected tons of other testimonials from other AFM members who prefer to remain anonymous →

“I wanted to be a part of a small group to support me staying alcohol free. I enjoyed Andy and other coaches’ lives and Zoom calls  and I was able to remain alcohol-free whilst enjoying learning about the science behind alcohol. Plus I made a lot of friends! It was life changing.”

I joined AFM to have a more focused period of time dedicated to being AF in a tighter, smaller group. I was looking for some inside tips to help hack this AF journey. I feel I have found so much inner strength and confidence and I really loved this course.

It gave me the time and space to really focus on my AF journey, my motivation for change, and my need for connection with others who have set alcohol aside. It was tremendous.”

“… It was such a tight-knit group of people with such diverse issues, all pulling in the same direction towards an AF lifestyle under the coaching of Andy. AFM made us accountable to each other but also gave us the opportunity to support one another. I found it really helpful.

“I joined the AFM course because I had been a serial resetter and wanted a more immersive experience, and liked the idea of the smaller accountability group. I was able to achieve the longest AF streak I’ve had so far as I had a toolkit to help me stay focused on the positives. I am more confident socially and building relationships with others on the journey helped that. I loved every day of the month on an adventure with a mini Tribe! I love being me again.”
